The Hogchoker's strange physical characteristics are a clear reflection of its adaptation to its habitat. This small fish is a flat bottom feeder;  instead of swimming vertically, like most fish,  it has evolved to swim horizontally, parallel to the river bottom.

To prevent losing the use of half its sight, the Hogchoker's left eye migrates to the right side of the head as it develops to maturity.
